My boss is retiring this year. For the 3 and a half years I've been working for her, she's been on the Holiday Party committee. This year, since she's leaving, she asked all of us who would be interested in being on the committee. Out of respect for her (the parties are nice), I decided to give it a shot.
I've been on party committees at other departments before. It's not my favorite thing in the world, mainly because I don't do well with group assignments. I just don't. Maybe I'm too much of a loner; maybe my brain is too snarky; maybe I'm just shy. Maybe the other people on the committee are too annoying. Hey, it could happen, right?
Anyway, last week they started trying to schedule the first meeting. I got a couple of Outlook appointment requests, one correcting the other. I accepted them both. Then, with no explanation, they canceled the meeting. Fine. Whatever. Then, one of the girls who's always on the committee emailed the girl who scheduled the meeting (also always on the committee) and CC'd all with a message about "this isn't everyone who is on the committee." Oh, and then those two were discussing the conference room situation, whatever that is. Did I need to see that? No. Did I expect them to work it out without involving me in the details? Yes. Did they? NO.
Today (the meeting was scheduled for this morning) we all got an email from one of the other committee members (one of the few males on it) about how he went to the meeting, only to find that there was no meeting. Apparently he didn't get the canceled meeting notice. Maybe he stopped paying attention what with all the unnecessary emails going back and forth. Anyway, he was (justifiably) pissed.
This is where I chimed in: I emailed the person who sent the meeting request (and subsequently canceled it): "I knew the meeting was canceled, but all the messages going back and forth was confusing." HINT HINT. Maybe I'm being a bitch but come on.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that the guy who went to the canceled meeting was left off the original email. They forwarded it to him later. They probably forgot to forward him the cancellation. He also has been on the committee before. They know him. They know him better than they know me.
Anyway, I also have to add that the messages were all written in that "I'm too busy to write a real sentence and/or utilize proper English and/or punctuation" style, so right there, you know I'm annoyed FROM THE VERY START. Because I don't do shorthand. I hate acronyms. Write a complete sentence, please.
Oh! And then at 2:10, I got a meeting request for a meeting starting at 2 p.m.! I declined it and wrote "Sorry, I need a little more advanced notice." Is this how it's going to be? At this rate, they're not going to want me on the committee. That would be fine with me.
And now I have the "Super Chicken" theme song in my head. Bach-ack!
